KARAWANGÂ Three students from Universitas Komputer Indonesia (UNIKOM) who are currently undertaking an internship at PT Teras Pasundan Mediatama visited Karawang Correctional Facility on Wednesday (August 26, 2026).
The three students, Khayla Fitria Zahra, Annisa Fatmawati Dewi, and Syakra Normalisa, had the opportunity to learn about various rehabilitation programs at Karawang Correctional Facility, particularly the food security program known as Laskar Farm.
During the visit, the students directly observed how unused land within the correctional facility is utilized for agricultural, livestock, and fishery activities.
Head of Karawang Correctional Facility, Ma’ruf Prasetyo, explained that the facility has approximately three hectares of unused land, with 1.7 hectares currently being utilized for agricultural activities.
“Karawang Correctional Facility has approximately three hectares of unused land. Around 1.7 hectares are used for agriculture because Karawang is well known for its rice production,” Ma’ruf said.
He explained that the program is not solely focused on food production, but also serves as part of the rehabilitation process for inmates.
“We directly involve inmates in farming and livestock activities. Through these activities, they can gain practical skills that may become useful when they return to society,” he said.
During the visit, the students were also introduced to several livestock programs developed through Laskar Farm, including Kampung Unggul Balitbang (KUB) chickens.
“We also raise KUB chickens. The inmates are taught how to take care of the chickens and hatch the eggs. The chicks can then be raised as broiler chickens or sold,” Ma’ruf explained.
In addition to KUB chickens, Laskar Farm also develops meat sheep, cattle, and several types of fish, including catfish, tilapia, carp, pangasius, and koi.
“We raise several types of meat sheep, including Dorper, Texel, Merino, and Suffolk. We also have cattle-fattening activities and fish farming,” he said.
According to Ma’ruf, these activities are intended to provide broader opportunities for inmates to develop practical skills during their rehabilitation.
“The more food security activities we develop, the more opportunities we can provide for inmates to learn and develop their skills,” he added.
Meanwhile, Khayla Fitria Zahra, one of the UNIKOM students, said the visit provided her with valuable new knowledge about the Laskar Farm program.
“My impression is that this visit was very educational for us, especially regarding Laskar Farm. We learned that the correctional facility has various productive activities that directly involve inmates,” Khayla said.
“We also learned how agriculture, livestock, and fish farming can become part of the rehabilitation process. I hope Karawang Correctional Facility will continue to grow and achieve greater success, and that the Laskar Farm program will continue to develop,” she added.
Annisa Fatmawati Dewi said the visit was a meaningful experience during their internship.
“In my opinion, this visit was very interesting because we were able to see the activities at Karawang Correctional Facility firsthand. Previously, we only knew about the program through information and news, but now we had the opportunity to see it directly,” Annisa said.
“What impressed me the most was seeing the inmates actively involved in productive activities. I think these skills can be very useful for them after they return to society,” she added.
Meanwhile, Syakra Normalisa said the visit gave her a new perspective on the rehabilitation process within a correctional facility.
“For me, this visit provided a new experience and a lot of knowledge. I realized that rehabilitation at Karawang Correctional Facility is not limited to activities indoors. There are also practical activities such as farming and livestock management,” Syakra said.
“I hope programs such as Laskar Farm can continue and grow. Hopefully, the activities carried out by Karawang Correctional Facility will continue to benefit both the inmates and the wider community,” she added.
The visit by the UNIKOM students from PT Teras Pasundan Mediatama provided them with an opportunity to gain practical knowledge outside their usual internship environment. Through the visit, they learned not only about the Laskar Farm program but also about how agriculture, livestock, and fish farming can be integrated into inmate rehabilitation.
Through Laskar Farm, Karawang Correctional Facility continues to utilize its available land while providing inmates with practical skills that can serve as valuable preparation for their return to society.
